In John 6. 30-31 the crowd asks Jesus for a sign so that they will believe him. Look back at 6.1-13. What had Jesus just done for the people the day before this request?? Hello, he only fed 5,000 men with 5 loaves and 2 fish!!! If that’s not enough evidence to believe in then I don’t know what is!
Now jump ahead in this conversation to John 12.37. Would the majority of this crowd finally believe because of miraculous signs? Unfortunately, the answer is no. These people wanted a show, they wanted to be entertained (that sounds familiar), they wanted all their needs provided for as if from a vending machine! So sad!
Read John 6.47-51
The Jews in this passage refused to let Jesus lead them into a total dependence on him. They grumbled against him just as their forefathers had grumbled against the manna that God had sent them. Let’s look at some scriptures that speak toward our total dependence on God.
Deuteronomy 8.2-3 & Psalm 63
The Lord, led his people into a dry and weary land so that he could humble and test them. Would they follow his commands, would they seek his provision, would they learn that they could not live without him as their leader and guide?? Has God brought you to a place of total dependence on him and/or are you grumbling against him?
Finally, read Ephesians 2.4-9
God’s provision for us is amazingly beautiful! Out of his love for us he makes us alive with Christ in spite of the fact that we were dead in sin!! His grace alone has saved. Further, he raised us up to life with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms! You are seated with Christ in glory if you are his follower! What a gift, what a provision!
The place of absolute dependence on God’s provision is one that many people never get to. We often have a situation that we think we can handle and fix on our own. And our solution may not even be so bad. However, when we learn to trust in God to handle our situations I think that we will find his solutions to be much more fulfilling! Pray this week that God will begin to humble you and lead you into his very best provision for whatever life throws at you.
