2. Rest: The people were not to reap or sow, they were to let the land rest. (For a year!) This seems an odd requirement; almost an unnecessary one to all those workaholics out there. I believe there are two reasons.
First, I think the LORD knows our propensity to overwork ourselves and those around us. Rest was a required part of every week, every festival, every seventh year, and every fiftieth year because without the requirement God knows we wouldn’t take the time to rest!
Second, and most importantly, it is a reminder that we are to rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. We cannot add to the work he has done, we cannot earn his love, we cannot do enough to earn salvation. What was needed has already been completed!!
Oh, how joyous it is to rest in his complete salvation and sanctifying work! Joy will continually elude you if you are working to earn what you will never be able to pay!
